Abstract: Within the past several months the technic of lighting Technicolor motion pictures has changed from more or less flat, evenly illuminated sets of highlight level to a method whereby the cinematographer now uses a much lower level of general illumination and has greater freedom with the use of “modelling” lamps. Recent developments in arc lamps for use in Technicolor lighting are discussed. The changed technic of lighting, made possible by the new equipment and the laboratory advancements, is briefly explained. The uses of each type of illuminant, diffusion screens, black screens, and other lighting-control devices are described. An explanation is given of the part taken by the chief set electrician, or “gaffer,” in lighting motion picture sets.
