- Abstract
- The advisability of using a non-linear volume characteristic in dialog recording is discussed. In this connection consideration is given to the following points: (a) the difference of level existing between the original and reproduced speech; (b) the advantages of a system in which manual monitoring can be confined to overall level correction rather than to momentary peaks; (c) the advantage of limiting the range of all except trained voices to assure the highest possible intelligibility. An analysis is then made of the various types of compression possible and a terminology is developed. Consideration is given to the type of device most applicable to motion picture recording. The electrical circuits and operating characteristics of a compressor that has been in commercial service for 18 months are discussed. Practical results and advantages obtained by the use of the device during this period are analyzed and the possibility of addition applications is indicated.
