Abstract: Recent advances in the quality of television film and telecine systems have raised questions about the usefulness of the automatic black level (ABL) control in telecine. This paper discusses the limitation as well as some advantages of using automatic black level control. The effects of the average picture level, optical flare and the attack time of the automatic black-level detector upon black level accuracy are demonstrated. It is shown that black compression occurring in the automatic mode can be reduced by decreasing the attack time of the black level detector.
