Abstract: Videotape recording from its introduction fifteen years ago has been widely accepted by the television industry, both as a production tool and a medium for distribution. The technology of videotape recording has advanced rapidly. From its inception, the capability to duplicate videotapes was an obvious requirement but until recently, machine-to-machine duplication (rerecording) in real time was the only practical solution; however, when a large number of copies is to be made, the process is extremely wasteful of time and equipment. If a single-reproduce machine is used to transfer to multiple-copy machines, a high degree of care must be taken to ensure uniformity of quality and interchangeability of the copies.
