Abstract: The rise of the theatrical motion picture from a slot machine to one of the world's great arts was watched by a hopeful group of educators with feelings of delight, then dismay and finally frustration. They, of course, were delighted with the film's educational possibilities but dismayed by the endless parade of tawdry pictures and, in the end, frustrated, because, while believing Bernard Shaw's “Fine art is the only teacher, except torture,” they failed to induce education to embrace the fine art of the film.
