Abstract: There is considerable divergence of opinion on the best ways of using a large computer as an aid in lens design. The individual computations can be performed very rapidly by a computer, but we begin to make use of its enormous speed and memory only if we program it so that it can choose and assess a new interim design in the light of assessments of previous designs. How should the assessments and the choices be made? Could they be entirely automatic? How much control should the designer retain?
