High-Order Line Interlace in Television Rasters

Abstract: In a television system of constant line and field frequencies, line interlace of order higher than 2:1 offers an improvement in vertical resolution without an increase in bandwidth. Large-area flicker, line crawl and bright/dim line pairing can be reduced to the point where they are not offensive by proper choice of interlace order and line sequence. Particularly good sequences appear to result from (N–3/5) and (N–4/7) lines/field, which gives 5:1 or 7:1 interlace respectively. Using a normal TV phosphor (P4) in the display CRT, the improvement in subjective resolution is clearly noticeable although less than the factor of 2.5 or 3.5 to 1 expected for 5:1 or 7:1 interlace. A long-persistence phosphor (P38) gives the full increase in subjective resolution.
