Abstract: Significant improvements in the important performance parameters of a quadruplex recorder, such as video SNR and moire figure, are now attainable through appropriate modification of the video and FM operating parameters of the system. It is now practical by going to “super high band” to achieve at an economical tape speed of 7.5 in/s (19 cm/s) a video performance level equal to that at the normal 15-in/s (38-cm/s) operation and do this without resorting to the use of a high-energy tape. Substantial reduction of residual time base and velocity error and chroma amplitude error can also be achieved by a video pilot correction technique. Use of the video pilot technique enables the quadruplex system to operate with more latitude in the machine setup accuracy and the head-wheel physical tolerances.
