Abstract
Today producers of virtually all television programs and commercials utilize the many benefits of the unique indexing technique offered by the American National Standard Time and Control Code sponsored by the SMPTE (ANSI C98.12-1975). With this precise indexing method, taped scenes can be relocated rapidly, accurately and automatically. The code also serves as “electronic sprockets” allowing several tape transports to be synchronized with extreme precision. Editing techniques utilizing the code have now become well established, but applying these techniques to audio post production requires some special attention. One major consideration is that many common audiotape recorders are not suitable for operation with the time code unless the playback circuitry is modified for wideband operation at winding speeds. The author can provide details of modifications which he has found to be successful to this end. A recently developed microprocessor-based synchronizing system with a variety of applications is discussed briefly.
