Abstract
In view of the fact that only a limited number of automatic videotape editing systems are available at present in West Germany's broadcasting institutions, the Institut fur Rundfunktechnik (IRT) started its own development program for this type of equipment. Some of me results so far obtained are described. Two pilot projects have been undertaken, one being an off-line and the other an on-line videotape editing system. While the off-line system is intended only for post production use, the on-line system can be applied in pre-broadcast program production, in post production work, and in live-program broadcasting. Both systems make use of so-called “intelligent” components (microprocessors); the off-line system uses a central intelligence, whereas the online system makes use of distributed intelligence. Ease of operator manipulation was one of the overriding design criteria. The subdivision of routine tasks, their functionally efficient control by means of clear-text operator/computer dialogue and instantly available status information were other no less important design criteria. The general layouts of both systems and their major components are described. Within 1979, prototypes of both systems will be tested in practical operation by the principal West German broadcasting stations.
