- Abstract
- In a discussion of the preservation of prime film and magnetic elements, the issue of fire suppression and how it impacts safety and the environment must be addressed. Water, common to all mandated sprinkler systems, can damage more material than it protects, causing substantial and unnecessary financial loss due to business interruption and downtime. Halon, a superior fire suppressant used to protect motion-picture and television elements as well as electronic equipment, has been phased out, along with other ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), as part of the Montreal Protocol. As new fire suppressing agents are introduced, complex choices must be made regarding new construction; especially important to consider is the upgrading of systems from water sprinklers to gaseous agents or retrofitting Halon 1301 systems.
