Abstract
This paper describes distance learning technologies utilized by the Stanford Instructional Television Network (SITN), the largest single university provider of televised graduate-level engineering and computer science courses in the world. Using a variety of delivery methods, SITN provides engineers, scientists, and technical managers throughout the U.S. and worldwide a means to extend their education without leaving their workplace by delivering to them graduate engineering courses, degree and certificate programs, short courses, and research seminars. Programming originates from ten specially designed studio classrooms each equipped as a complete TV studio utilizing robotically controlled TV cameras, special-effects generators, student microphones, “return-video” monitors, and return-audio circuits from the distant sites.

bio
Aubrey Harris has been chief of engineering and operations at Stanford Instructional Television Network, Stanford University, since 1987. Prior to this he held similar positions at the University of California at both the Santa Cruz and Davis campuses. His work in industry includes research and development at Dolby Laboratories and at Ampex Corp., where he was involved in the development of the first broadcast videotape recorders. In 1957, as chief engineer of the Bermuda Broadcasting Co., he built the first television station on the island of Bermuda. In the 1950s he was with Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Co. at Chelmsford, England, where he worked on color television system design and the adaptation of the NTSC system for operation on the early British television standard of 405 lines. Harris studied electrical and radio engineering at City University in London and is the author of more than 30 technical articles on television and electrical engineering design. He is a Life Member of the SMPTE and has served as Manager of the San Francisco Section. He is also a member of the IEEE and a participant in various section committees.
