Abstract: This paper describes a services-on-demand (SoD) laboratory demonstrator with personal computer (PC)-based set-top boxes (STBs). The implementation is part of a research project of Deutsche Telekom's Technology Centre, whose aim is the verification and demonstration of the general concept to use the German public online service “T-Online” with Internet access as a platform for SoD. The laboratory demonstrator extends the T-Online system by broadband downstream connections between the content server and the customers. Authentication, billing, and navigation through the SoD content are provided by the existing T-Online infrastructure. Based on a first step configuration with two example applications, a first performance analysis has been made.

Bernhard Gross received the M. Sc. degree in electrical engineering in 1986 and the Ph.D. degree in 1991, both from the Technical University of Darmstadt. He has been with Deutsche Telekom since 1991. Within the Interactive Audiovisual Services and Systems Research Group he is involved with the design and development of sample applications and terminal equipments of a services-on-demand laboratory demonstrator.

Stephan Breide , received his M. Sc. and Ph. D. degrees from the Technical University of Braunschweig. In 1990, he joined Deutsche Telekom and has been head of the Interactive Audiovisual Services and Systems Research Group since 1994. His current interests are related to high-quality videoconferencing systems and on-demand services.

Wolfgang Ruppel received the Diploma degree and the Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) degree in communications engineering from the Darmstadt Technical University in 1989 and 1994, respectively. He was employed at the Institute of Communications Engineering of Darmstadt Technical University from 1989 to 1994. He has been with the research labs of Deutsche Telekom since 1994, currently working on server technology for broadband interactive video services.
