Abstract: Classical principles of condenser design are cited as a point of departure for discussing Luneburg's criterion for assessing uniformity of illumination on the basis of calculations made from lens data. Attention is called to pitfalls, in the form of physical impossibilities, which can be avoided early in a design effort. A discussion of those features of an illuminating system that distinguish between an easy and a difficult design is included, along with some techniques for relieving the difficulties. Also included is a discussion of the influence of various types of light sources on the design.
