Abstract
The Photoconductive Effect was discovered in selenium in 18731 but it was not until 1950 that a photoconductive camera tube — the vidicon — was announced. The photoemissive effect on the other hand, discovered about 1890,2 was incorporated in a practical camera tube about 1930. The reason for this difference in the rate of development is easy to understand because, in spite of the basically higher quantum efficiency of photoconductors, it proved very difficult to control their other properties for television applications.
