- The expectation of high-definition television is that it should at least be a technically superior viewing experience—so picture quality is immediately an issue. Maintaining quality through post-production is vital as it is a part of the complex path from scene to screen. Moreover, with far greater picture detail, corrective measures to improve the pictures also assume high importance as does the tool-set to enable programmakers to accomplish their planned results. Achieving such aims economically appears to be hampered by the very high data rates and storage needed for HD; but by examining a number of alternatives, acceptable schemes can be found.

Mark Horton has over 20 years experience in the post and broadcast sectors. He is group product manager for editing at Quantel and currently chairs the marketing group of the AAF Association, an independent cross-industry body set-up to improve file interchange between platforms and applications. — Before joining Quantel, Horton edited at post houses in London and Copenhagen. Bob Pank is technical communications manager for Quantel Ltd., U.K. Among many duties, he contributes papers to technical conferences, authors technical articles, and is the editor of several books including the Digital Fact Book. More recent work has involved the Internet and other new media. — After graduating (with Honors) in electrical engineering from Imperial College, London, he gained very useful television experience with the BBC in London as videotape engineer. — In 1976 he joined Quantel, where his work involved engineering support for sales and marketing. This included introducing new products to many countries and the opportunity to witness the spread of digital techniques throughout television. He was later responsible for management of graphics products and in 1992 began his current position. - Copyright
