Abstract: Current HDTV codec technology has provided the link to enable successful delivery of HDTV to the home. Similar technology is being used to help make exciting applications such as Electronic Cinema a reality. These implementations differ: so what are the considerations that need to be made. After providing a brief overview of HDTV and a standards update, this paper will focus on the implementation considerations necessary when applying current HDTV codec technology to ATSC, DVB, and Electronic Cinema.

Bjorn Christensson received an M.S. in electrical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in 1983. In 1985, he joined the Swedish Telecom Research Laboratories where he worked on digital compression for television and videoconferencing, including related image processing research and standardization. In 1988, Christensson co-founded Digital Vision, DV Sweden AB, where he currently holds the position of chief scientist.

Keith Jenkins holds an IEE accredited Honours Degree equivalent. His early career covers areas as diverse as electronic control, RF, security surveillance, and CCTV. For the last 12 years he has worked in the broadcast industry as an R&D engineer and has more than eight years of experience in compression technology. He is currently technical director of Digital Vision (U.K.) Ltd. — Jenkins is a member of SMPTE, the BKSTS, and an associate member of the IEE.

Peter Weiss was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1958. He is president of Digital Vision, DV Sweden AB, a media technology company he co-founded in 1988. — Weiss received an M.S. in electrical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in 1981 and was head of the Image Processing group at Swedish Telecom Research Laboratories between 1981 and 1988. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, vice-chairman of Section XII Information Technology, and was recently elected Manager of the SMPTE Nordic Section.
