Abstract
In the modern world of digital television (DTV), lives have become complicated beyond all reason. For various technopolitical reasons, television formats come in an abundance of flavors; 703 are worst case! Progressive or interlace exists in a multitude of field or frame rates, therefore, users or originators of DTV programming may have to deal with all of these formats.

Peter Wilson is head of high-definition television and advanced technology at Snell & Wilcox, where his broad, in-depth knowledge of the industry and his expertise has contributed significantly to the continued growth of the global company. He joined Snell & Wilcox in 1992 from Sony Broadcast. — Wilson worked at Sony for ten years and in 1985 became senior manager, responsible for the management and promotion of high-definition video systems (HDVS). Prior to then, television studio engineer at the Royal his career included roles such as U.K. College of Art and Design, and television studio manager for the Electronic Technician at the National Film and Television School, University of Portsmouth.
