Abstract: Experience in installing large numbers of a standard sound-film equipment in theaters indicated that sound quality was not related to the overall frequency characteristic or the reverberation time. A pulse technique is described which gives a direct picture of the direct and reverberant sound at any location. The value of the reverberation-time concept as presently defined is questioned and recommendations for the optimum design of theaters are given, based on the results of pulse analysis.
