Abstract: A number of researches have been made to determine the photometric range of outdoor scenes. The results are considered of importance in the determination of photographic exposure and as criteria for the improvement of artificial lighting. The data obtained by different investigators differ so widely, however, that one becomes suspicious. An examination indicates that the concept of overall range is meaningless and should be abandoned.
