Abstract
This article describes a European specification developed for the future transmission of digitized television signals via satellite. The system allows the transmission of highly protected digital signals via satellite channels of different bandwidths. Signals with useful data rates ranging from 18.9 Mbits/sec to 68.5 Mbits/sec per channel can be transmitted according to the relevant channel bandwidth and the intended size of the receiving antenna. In addition to classical television services with the whole spectrum of technical picture quality culminating in HDTV, a variety of sound programs and diverse data services are supported.
