- Abstract
- There has recently been renewed interest in the restoration of sound tracks for classic motion pictures. Many analog processes and techniques have been used in the past with varying degrees of success. Although digital noise-removal systems can be more effective, they are usually expensive, complex, and require considerable training to operate. Consequently, many films that could benefit from a thorough audio cleaning are not restored due to financial considerations. This paper describes a dynamically controllable broadband noise filter, based on digital signal processing (DSP) techniques, which is both simple to use and comparatively inexpensive.

bio
Steve Boze is currently the chief engineer of Buena Vista Sound (division of Walt Disney Studios). He began his career with Walt Disney at their Imagineering department in 1981 and moved over to the studio in 1985. In 1989 he was promoted to chief engineer, and he has held this position for nearly seven years. Boze was the project engineer on the three-year renovation of the Disney sound department, which began in 1986. He is now spearheading the construction of a totally new sound facility, which will serve as the model and proving ground for the next-generation digital sound and editorial complex. - Copyright
