- In this paper, we propose a new architecture, and its implementation, for the media-processing unit of the set-top unit (STU) in ETRI's video-on-demand (VOD) system, Interactive Multimedia exPRESS (IMPRESS). The STU in our system has MPEG-2 video quality in movie-on-demand, but low quality in bidirectional communication when considering implementation cost. The media processing unit in our STU consists of three parts: one is system control module, which has a reduced instruction set computing (RISC) processor and controls the overall functions of the unit; another is an MPEG-2 decoder module, which decodes MPEG-2 transport stream (TS) in realtime and presents the contents; and the third is an audio/video communication module, which enables bidirectional video-conferencing.

Kyeong-Yeol Yu graduated from the Seoul National University with a B.S. degree in control engineering in 1992 and received his M.S. degree in 1994 at the same university. He joined the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) multimedia communication section in 1994 as a researcher on the implementation of a video-on-demand system and its Internet access architecture. Yu is currently participating in a project on the test platform implementation of a multipoint control unit for a videoconferencing system. Other research interests are the application of multimedia communication in a network environment and an audiovisual service using the Internet.Jong-Hoon ParkElectronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, Taejon, Korea.bio
Jong-Hong Park is with the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) of Korea. As a senior researcher, his work focuses on the multimedia communications, including video-on-demand, videoconference, video broadcasting, etc. Park received his B.S. and M.A. degrees from ChoongAng University, and a Ph.D. in computer vision studies from the same university. - Copyright
