Abstract: With the advent of large-capacity film reels and platter systems, the use of tape splicing has emerged as the preferred method because tape splices, unlike cement splices, can be disassembled and remade without a loss of film. Furthermore, tape splices permit the splicing of dissimilar film base materials and films containing proprietary post-process coatings. This article describes the various tape-splicing methods and equipment needed to make proper tape splices. Techniques used to make tape splices on existing equipment as well as on equipment designed specifically for tape splicing are also discussed.
