Abstract
Digital EDTV, our proposed widescreen EDTV system, is fully compatible with existing NTSC television receivers and can be broadcast over current 6-MHz channels. It splits an EDTV source into low- and high-resolution components by a novel method. The lower-resolution component is transmitted through an analog channel in a letter-box format over 180 active scan lines/field, and the high-resolution component is digitally compressed and transmitted by 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16 QAM) in the space above and below the letterbox as well as on the quadrature phase of the picture carrier.
