- Abstract
- A considerable amount of research has recently been devoted to different schemes of channel coding for digital storage and retrieval of data. Although there are various schemes of channel-modulation applications, in the computer industry a more suitable channel code can substantially improve video coding performance. The new 8–14 channel code developed by NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corp.) is a third-generation video coding scheme. The code further improves the performance of digital videotape recorders (DVTRs) by reducing record bandwidth and limiting propagation errors, as well as providing a DC-free code. Because of its compact nature, it also allows high recording density in a small tape format, making possible the development of new, compact, portable DVTRs.
