- Abstract
- Computers have been used in the post-production process for a number of years, mainly for providing graphics and animation. With the advent of general-purpose computers that are powerful enough to store and display images at resolutions and frame rates required for real-time film and video work, new possibilities present themselves. On-line disk-based editing, three-dimensional special effects, and multilayer compositing are just a few of the tasks that can now be done on general-purpose hardware. This leads to questions about the relative performance and quality of computer-based systems versus traditional video equipment, what other advantages are provided in an open-architecture environment and, most importantly, what kind of positive impact can these systems make in the changing economic environment of today's post-production market.
