Abstract: This article compares the EBU/IRT 4-bit code in Europe and the SMPTE time code, both technically and operationally. It describes how the SMPTE code can be used in film editing and the problems which can arise, due to the structure of the SMPTE code, in real-time applications. Some methods to overcome these problems are discussed.
