- Abstract
- Various methods of bandwidth reduction for high-definition television (HDTV) have been investigated previously. Many are based on filtering out image high-frequency components in moving areas, which it is assumed that the eye does not require. Our investigations have shown that this assumption is not usually valid. A digitally-assisted television (DATV) technique incorporating motion-vector measurement has been developed which enables the performance of such an adaptive filtering system to be greatly improved. This article describes the technique and shows how it can form the basis of a practicable HDTV transmission system, by incorporating a digital control signal.
