Dynamic Rounding in Digital Video Processing: An Update

Abstract: Over the past 15 years, the use of digital sampling, storage, and processing of broadcast video has grown from early applications in time base correctors and synchronizers to completely integrated digital post-production areas. Experience with 8-bit systems over the years, combined with other tests and realistic considerations of recording methods, led to the adoption of 8 bits as the primary level in the SMPTE/EBU digital standards. So why, given the acceptance of 8 bits, are dynamic rounding and increased resolution still under consideration? Where do the artifacts of this popular interface reveal themselves, thus promoting such debates? This article outlines the background to the discussions, reports on the progress of dynamic rounding, and proposes the positioning of the technique within the broadcast chain.
