Abstract: This article describes some of the considerations and techniques of one firm (Century III) in the design and installation of a PAL-format transfer, edit, and graphics suite for PAL post-production of several television series. Century III is posting these series simultaneously in NTSC and PAL, so this article explores not only the technical challenge of operating a PAL “island” within an otherwise NTSC facility, but also the creative challenge of mimicking certain components of the shows, such as special effects, in both formats. The design criteria, installation, and operation of the PAL facility are described.
