- Abstract
- To achieve a more compact and longer-playing videocassette recorder (VCR), the number and the size of its recording bits must become smaller. The authors have achieved a data rate of 28 Mbits/sec for a component-coded video that normally requires approximately 200 Mbits/sec, maintaining high picture quality with less noticeable degradation by using a new discrete cosine transform (DCT)-based bit-rate reduction method. The authors have developed a data format based on the triple Reed-Solomon product code and a new 8/14 modulation scheme to make the recording density higher. An experiment showing the feasibility of the authors' new system concept is discussed in this article.
