- Letter-box-type enhanced-definition television (EDTV) is a solution to the problem of transmitting wide-aspect pictures in NTSC-signal format. An experimental decoder for that system has been developed, and luminance and chrominance (YC) separation, line interpolation, line conversion, and other signal processings are described in this article. To assist in line interpolation, line differences for low-luminance frequencies are sent to the decoder using scanning lines that are not used for the main picture. In the same period, horizontal details are also sent to expand the horizontal resolution of the reproduced picture. It was found that the two helper signals are effective for some picture scenes, and several problems related to these signals are also discussed.
