Abstract
Full-bandwidth video teleconferencing based upon a three-way Ku-band satellite communications link has played a significant role since 1986 in administrative interaction, patient diagnosis, medical image consultation, and education at the three facilities of the Mayo Foundation. This modality has limited applicability in extended medical settings due to the capital costs of the Ku-band earth station equipment and the operational requirements of the satcom environment. This study was designed to assess the feasibility of decreasing bandwidth requirements from 90 Mbits/sec to T-1 rates (1.5 Mbits/sec) using the most modern data compression algorithms and codecs. This article describes the testing criteria and results as they relate to our routine applications, including the most exacting task of medical diagnostic image consultation. Comparison results will demonstrate degradation of the image with the high compression rate codecs.
