Abstract: The year 1946, on July 24, marked 30 years of achievement in motion picture engineering and standardization for the Society of Motion Picture Engineers. From its first organization meeting the Society has had as its fundamental aim the standardization of motion picture film, equipment, and accessories from the standpoint of dimensional tolerances, data, processes, nomenclature, and the like which either directly or indirectly might be applicable to the production, distribution, and exhibition phases of the motion picture industry. The early organizers, many of whom are now well-known engineers and scientists in this industry, did at their fist meetings 30 years ago originate proposals to become standards of the SMPE, as the American Standards Association did not exist. These proposals and SMPE Standards were reviewed and redrafted many times before eventually becoming American Standards in the early 30's.
