Abstract: During the SMPTE Conference in Los Angeles (21–26 October 1979), the USSR delegation extended an invitation to SMPTE President Robert M. Smith and his wife, Edna, to visit the Soviet Union during the 1980 Telekinotechnika Exposition and Technical Conference scheduled to be held in Moscow 28 February — 12 March 1980. The year 1980 also marks the 60th anniversary of the motion picture industry in the USSR (1920–1980). Shortly thereafter, a formal invitation was received by the Society from Dr. Oleg I. Ioshin, a Fellow of the SMPTE and Deputy Chairman of the USSR State Committee for Cinematography. The invitation was accepted, and the following is President Smith's account of his and his wife's experiences and observations during their visit to the Soviet Union.
