- Abstract
- The use of networks of cables for telecommunications was established by the telephone. Although similar methods have been used to some extent for broadcast distribution, it is only now that the use of potentially inexpensive optical fibers is coinciding with ideas of extensive interactive systems based on television. Some exciting possibilities are already being demonstrated by, for example, Warner Communication's Qube system in Ohio and the Hi-Ovis project in Japan. The basics of fiber-optics technology and the uses to which it is being put are described, culminating in the recurrent theme that present developments are leading to a widening of consumer choice.
