Abstract: It is indisputably of great advantage to have an automatic focusing mechanism on title, cartoon and trick cameras. Such a device would be generally appreciated in making certain types of shots in the studio. An auto-focus mechanism relieves the cameraman of the necessity for watching and adjusting the focus of the lens whenever the field is changed. The results obtained in making approach shots are better where the focusing operation is performed mechanically rather than manually. Focusing adjustments are purely mechanical operations and there is no reason to suppose that they cannot be performed by a machine. Experience with several different types of auto-focus devices have proved their practicability.
