On Testing the Colorimetric Performance of TV Cameras

Abstract: Colorimetric tolerance limits for acceptable reproduction performance of TV cameras for light skin tones and some color groups are suggested. These are based on color differences between original and reproduced color derived from experimental results of two independent, large-scale measurement studies of TV studio cameras. The suggested limits compare reasonably well with published results of subjective tests. Regarding the suggested tolerance limits, it is shown that for the 93 cameras measured the average performance for the color groups does not give more information about camera performance acceptability than is given by a single light skin tone. The measurement of this single sample therefore gives as much information about performance acceptability as the average based on measurement of the larger number of samples in the color groups investigated. If this is generally valid, evaluation of acceptability based mainly on the results for group averages, as in some presently recommended methods, is insufficient. The evaluation must then be based on results for individual color samples alone.
