- Abstract
- Different people have widely differing views of what they mean by the “perfect” television system. The requirements seem to be without limit, and many are mutually exclusive. This article proposes an alternative “ideal” standard that could adapt, on an element-by-element basis, to continually provide a near-optimum balance of performance aspects for all individual areas of the picture. Three-dimensional filtering can provide much better utilization of the available bandwidth and may produce results similar to those of adaptive processing. The ideal standard concept includes a standard transmission format that would operate with standard and high-definition signals in a way that would make them compatible.
