Abstract
Standards conversion has been a feature of the television industry since its inception. Recent technical advances have enabled a new technology, motion compensation, to be applied to the process. Real-time analysis of the signal is used to measure the motion of all objects in the scene, which are used to significantly reduce the motion artifacts normally present in a converted signal. With accurate vectors the converted performance is as good as that with stationary images. The vectors may also be used with film-originated material to give the signal the same appearance as video, or to correct for the irregular sequence created when 24 frame/sec film is played into 60 field/sec video.
