- Abstract
- An innovative and inexpensive off-line videotape editing system is described which permits single camera film style production shooting using an electronic camera with a single videotape recorder. The single camera film technique, developed over an 80-year period, does not permit editing during production, in direct contrast to the television multi-camera technique. Television developed without the benefit of a storage medium, and all editing was done directly during production by switching from one camera to another in real time. This multi-camera television technique is suited to some types of production, but others are best produced in the traditional single camera film style where all edit decisions are made in the post production stage. The single camera production technique offers a great deal of artistic flexibility. Single camera photography can be done with electronic cameras on videotape, but, up to present, an inexpensive off-line videotape editing system tailored to the specific requirements of single camera production was not available. The system developed by CBS permits the free combination of camera angles and scene elements in any desired sequence, and permits the action at each edit point to be matched and previewed. It provides a practical and immediate real time replay using videotape. The system is optimized especially for the re-editing phase, as most single camera productions undergo four to six revisions before final approval, and each revision needs real time review for evaluation. The operational efficiency of the single camera videotape post production editing system is illustrated.
