- Abstract
- A quick-response light-modulating device would be useful for extending the frequency range possible in recording variable-area soundtracks. A laser light-modulating device based on a new principle has been constructed. The deflection angle of the laser beam is kept constant, independent of the level of the recorded sound signal; the variable-area soundtrack is produced by an optical shutter controlled by pulse-width-modulated signals. The block diagram and optical scheme of the device are given and its operation is explained. A laboratory unit is described and a recording obtained experimentally is illustrated. Several advantages of the new device are indicated.
