Abstract: In 1916 a group of engineers and technicians formally incorporated the Society of Motion Picture Engineers, and soon afterwards Canadians began their association with the society. This paper describes the growth of the society, the creation of the Canadian section in 1957, and the contributions made by Canadian members — as well as their unique problems.

Author: Gerald Graham was Director of Planning and Research for the National Film Board of Canada until his retirement in 1979. He is now active as a consultant in the Ontario, Canada area. Among his many elected SMPTE. offices, Mr. Graham is a former Editorial Vice-President and a Governor for the Canadian Region. He is the recipient of the John Grierson International Gold Medal Award for 1976.
