Abstract
This paper presents subjective test results of a new high-efficiency coding method to the NTSC color TV signal, i.e., an interfield-intrafield adaptive prediction coding. In order to examine the performance of this adaptive prediction coding, subjective tests have been performed for the pictures obtained at transmission rates of from 15 Mbit/s to 32 Mbit/s, for comparison of picture quality with that of an intrafield prediction coding and with the pictures by cascaded coding of the adaptive prediction coding. From the results, it is clear that a picture quality at 30 Mbit/s including the sound program (0.3 Mbit/s) and error-correcting-codes (2.0 Mbit/s), which can transmit two broadcasting TV programs simultaneously via INTELSAT IV satellite, is satisfactory for almost all the pictures. The adaptive application of the interfield prediction makes it possible to reduce the transmission rate of about 10 Mbit/s to obtain the satisfactory picture quality in comparison with the intrafield prediction solely. The picture quality obtained by two-times coding of the adaptive prediction in cascade may still be acceptable for commercial use.
