Three relatively new applications that are leveraged on the success of these new technologies are video-on-demand, computer-based digital film special effects, and new image-based information services. Now that commercial availability of these new technologies is on the horizon, the issue of storage and access to the avalanche of digitized video and image data that is likely to assault us during the next few years needs to be addressed.
