This paper, after reminding parameters of the different members discusses extensions of this hierarchical family. It emphasizes the complementarity of the different levels when the hierarchy of standards is associated with a hierarchy of studio equipment. Members of the hierarchy are mainly described by the signal representation of their luminance component. Other levels can be derived from the different options for the colour difference signal representation. Practical considerations on performance and interface aspects allow selection of the most appropriate options. Further analysis of practical implementation of digital interfaces show that some interlace and progressive signal representations can make use of the same pieces of equipment. The hierarchy of equipment offers a great flexibility with respect to cost or technical constraints in that the most appropriate standard can be used for the application.
