This paper proposes a method of operating HDTV equipment which reduces the cost, complexity, and image degradation inherent in conversion to PAL, NTSC, and 35mm film. The operating modes proposed are frame-rate friendly to the local television standard, and High Definition tapes created using the system can be interchanged between countries with no temporal interpolation required. This offers the possibility of international hardware standardization now, and enhanced-capability HDTV-only distribution in the future.
