However, the interest in new TV standards must be seen in the light of the fact that, displays apart, durinq this same 20 years there have been fundamental changes in most other aspects of television technology. Solid state devices have led to the introduction of digital techniques in the studio as well as for recording and distribution. The use of satellites and optical fibre cable have both been established as a means of transmitting video directly to the home viewer.
