This paper provides an overview of digital video format conversion and introduces a scalable parallel processing architecture that addresses spacial conversions. Video formats vary by sampling rate, line rate, aspect ratio, frame rate, and scan type. In a conversion between formats, these differences must be resolved through spatial resampling, frame rate conversion, and de-interlacing. The architecture that is introduced tackles the two dimensional conversion that is needed for the sampling rate, line rate, and aspect ratio discrepancies. A resizing filter is at the heart of this processor for the sample and line scaling that is needed. The high sampling frequencies of high definition formats make it difficult to implement the required digital signal processing functions with existing technology.
